I suppose many people were surprised to hear that I was 39 years old in May, as reported in last month’s column. So, before you all make fun of me, let me explain. I meant that I observed the 39th anniversary of my 39th birthday in May. My daughter said, “How many is that Dad?”

Stringfellow Road Project.

The actual re-location of utilities on Stringfellow Road should start in June. They will be moving gas lines, optic cable lines and utility poles on the east side of Stringfellow and moving the new main water pipes on some of the areas on the west side of Stringfellow. I talked to VDOT last week and got a partial explanation on how they will proceed to add two more lanes. The plan is to keep the present two lanes in use while they lay new road surface lanes on either side of existing lanes. Work is to start on the road surface in spring 2012. I will pass on any additional planning information as I receive it. We had a GCA Board meeting the beginning of May, which was probably the shortest meeting we’ve had in a long time. The district representatives and your block captains are hard at work canvassing our neighborhood. As reported last month, we have a nice savings in our treasury, but we anticipate paying some big bills when VDOT builds our new parking lot at the Community Center. Greenbriar Community Center. Look for an article by Carolyn Smillie (a Chantilly High School senior) in this issue of the Flyer. Carolyn interviewed me recently for her article on the Greenbriar Community Center, and Barbara and I were thoroughly impressed with this young woman. If Carolyn is an example of the next generation, we are all in good hands. Carolyn was born and raised here in Greenbriar, and her dad, Chad, is the Community Center’s operating manager, so Carolyn knows what she is talking about when it comes to the Center.

Poplar Tree Traffic Calming.

Your GCA is hosting a community meeting to provide information on the Poplar Tree Traffic Calming to citizens in the affected areas on Tuesday, May 17. Representatives from the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Supervisor Pat Herrity’s office will be present. This is the required procedure before the county asks Greenbriar residents to vote on traffic calming. The plan is to install three speed tables about 500 feet apart on Poplar Tree. I will keep you informed through this column as we progress. GCA Annual Election of Officers and the Citizen of the Year Award. Please mark your calendar and join us on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenbriar Community Center. We still need two district representatives for the Board. Please call me to volunteer.

Condolences.

The Greenbriar community lost one of its favorite ladies this past month, Lois Mansell, who lived on Memory Lane. Lois and her husband, Don, and daughter, Nancy, moved to Greenbriar in the late sixties and were proud to be among “the pioneers of Greenbriar.” Lois was one of the first members of the Western Fairfax County Woman’s Club (originally named the Greenbriar Woman’s Club) and served the community through woman’s club projects for 40 years. Her daughter, Nancy, was her faithful companion. Our condolences go out to the family and to Lois’ many friends in the community.

See ya’ll around Greenbriar
