Greenbriar House Drawings: Last month’s reminder in the Flyer about the availability of Greenbriar house drawings resulted in 14 sets being ordered in one week. Therefore, I say again … the Jefferson, Essex, Briarwood and Ashley drawings are available at $20 each, payable to the Greenbriar Civic Association. Call me at 703-378-6009 to order. We are still looking for a resident who has drawings for the Georgetown or Nottingham houses. Let me know if you have one of them, PLEASE. I can make those drawings available to our Greenbriar neighbors.

The Washington Post Covers Greenbriar: There was an article called “Park yourself” by Ann Cameron Siegal in the Saturday, February 12, Real Estate section (section E) of The Post. The article covered how homeowners can free up extra living space by converting their garages. A survey of about half of Greenbriar indicated that about 70 garages had been converted. Greenbriar got a one-paragraph mention. However, Ann took a liking to the Greenbriar community, and she is now preparing an article just on Greenbriar for the “Where We Live” series. Look for it in a future Saturday Real Estate section. I hope to get permission to reprint the article in our Greenbriar Flyer. Ann was impressed with our newspaper’s quality for such a small community.

Snow Blowers: I see a lot more residents have snow blowers these days. I also see that the people around me help their neighbors out when we have snow on the ground. I expect that is typical. GCA Board members suggested that we identify neighbors with snow blowers who would be willing to help others in Greenbriar, even for a price. There are plenty of elderly people here in Greenbriar who would be happy to pay to have their sidewalks and driveways cleared of snow by people with snow blowers … or even teenagers with shovels. Let me know if anyone would like to be on a volunteer or “for pay” list. I’ll need your name and phone number, please. (Since you’ll be reading this in March, hopefully, we won’t still be getting that white stuff, but I’ll be happy to keep the list for next year.)

Community Center “Special Exception”: The Fairfax County Planning Department has provided a staff report that recommends approval of the Special Exception SE2010 SP- 029/SPA78-P-192-03 to the Board of Zoning Appeals and later to the Fairfax Board of Supervisors. The purpose is to have the Pleasant Valley Preschool and the New Hope Church, which meet regularly at the Community Center, be allowed to continue. The first hurdle is with the Board of Zoning Appeals on Thursday, February 24, at 8:15 p.m. You may have seen the yellow public hearing boards posted along Stringfellow Road.

We have been told repeatedly that “this is a piece of cake”or “it’s a slam dunk,” but I can’t help but get P.O.’d at all of the community money we have been required to spend just to satisfy the paperwork process. I had better quit now before I say something that will foul everything up. I have to keep my cool and smile at the Public Hearings.

Greenbriar Citizen of the Year: It’s that time of the year again when we solicit your nominees for the Greenbriar Citizen of the Year. Please look for the application form elsewhere in this issue of the Flyer and nominate someone in our community who volunteers their time and energy to help people or organizations. Keep in mind that their work is not limited to Greenbriar. For example, volunteer hours for Meals on Wheels, churches, charities, the Fairfax County Park Authority and leadership roles in other volunteer organizations also count.

See ya’ll around Greenbriar
